Our aim is to provide a safe, stimulating and secure environment in which your child is encouraged to develop their full potential. We respect each child’s personality and reinforce positive behaviour in a sharing environment.
Cheeky Cherubs is open Monday – Friday from 7:30am until 6pm, 51 weeks per year, excluding bank holidays.

We aim to be as flexible as possible. we run no set session and just ask that sessions are booked to the half hour.
At Cheeky Cherubs we believe that children are cared for in an inspiring and nurturing environment, where they develop motivation, curiosity and a desire to learn through self-discovery and exploration. Children’s confidence and independence is built through the extension of their thoughts and interests. Children’s techniques are developed to promote problem solving and the regulation of their emotions. Children have unlimited free-flow access to the nursery garden, and we make the most of opportunities to play and explore the natural world around us. A great emphasis and importance is placed on the relationship between nursery and parents and it is built on trust and mutual respect.
Staff at our nursery use the Development Matters as the document for informing their policies and practice. Development matters focuses on the seven key feature of effective practice. They are:
These themes provide a template on which we are able to plan and map the services we provide with a broad range of challenging and stimulating activities, both indoors and outdoors, to promote your child’s development. Individual planning enables each child to reach their personal goals and we take in to account any special educational needs.
We assess how young children are learning and developing by observing them frequently. When assessing a child practitioners draw on their own knowledge of the child and their own professional judgement.
We believe that parents know their children best and we ask them to contribute to assessment, sharing information about what their children like to do at home and how parents are supporting development. We have frequent parent’s appointments throughout the year so that parents and practitioners can discuss where the child is at and to highlight anything that needs further development.
The Children’s centre opened in 2005 and is a purpose-built development, created by the government’s Surestart initiative. Cheeky Cherubs Day Nursery opened in 1996 and was originally based in a large family house in Minehead. In April 2006 Cheeky Cherubs moved to the Alcombe Children’s Centre.

In discoverers our aim is to create a home from home for your child. Our focus is on creating a friendly and welcoming environment in which we can create attachments to help settle your child into nursery life and to make them feel happy and safe. Our staff are caring, nurturing and friendly. Like the other rooms in Cheeky Cherubs, Discoverers use the key worker approach. This allows us to cater to the needs of each child’s individual needs and routine. We have a separate sleep room which allows the children from Discoverers to sleep as and when needed. We also have our own kitchenette which allows us to make bottles ect., whenever throughout the day. Within our room we have three different areas: the first is a natural and inviting play space that include a cosey, snug area in which role play, small world, treasure baskets, books, musical instruments, and much more is readily available to the children on a daily basis. The second area is a soft play and physical area where children are encouraged to develop their physical learning. In this area there is a variety of equipment including tunnels, a ball pit, small climbing frame, and soft play, which is alternated to keep the environment exciting for the children. The final area is messy playroom where children are able to take part in water play, malleable play, and arts and crafts. Children are encouraged to follow their interests and have free flow to the three areas. Discoverers room also has their own garden space which is used all throughout the year to allow children to learn in an outdoor environment and allow children to explore the natural world around us. As well as all of this activities are planned to develop the learning of your child by their key worker.
Explorers room is based around those who have become confidently mobile months (from about 2 years) to 3 years. We offer a variety of activities throughout the day which children can come and go as they please. These activities are a combination of child and adult led which could include: messy play, water play, role play, small world, arts, crafts and much more. Within our room we have free flow access to the garden in all weathers to promote outdoor exploration. We also have a play gym and a cosey room. In this room we begin to encourage the children to be more independent. We also forest school and swimming to explorers.
In Adventurers we help children to develop the skills to become lifelong learners. The children can explore in a free flow environment, where they are able to extend their own interests. Children’s learning happens through their play experiences, with knowledgeable key workers extending and enhancing their play.
Children have access to a well-equipped room and garden which includes small world, construction, creative areas, sand and water play, mud kitchens and a play dough kitchen. Children are able to access resources freely.
The daily routine promotes undisturbed times to play as well as small group times, including circle time, story time and song time.
In Adventurers we support children in becoming independent and confident individuals to provide them with the skills they need to further develop their knowledge as they move onto their next journey of school.
Cheeky Cherubs has a large, exciting outdoor play area. The outdoor play area is divided into three age group areas – one for each room. Both explorers and adventurers have free flow into the garden from their inside space. Discover garden space is used . Outdoor activities contribute to children’s health, their physical development and their knowledge of the world around them.
In the outdoor play areas, we aim to mirror our inside provision to include messy play, arts and crafts, small world, role play and much more. In addition to those activities available indoors we have some large climbing apparatus, sand pits and play houses. We have recently installed two large, permanent mud kitchens – one for the Adventurers and one for the Explorers – where children can play freely and indulge in messy play. Discoverers also have a smaller mud kitchen within their garden.
In the summer we use several gazebos to provide shade and the children can splash about in our paddling pool. Read our Sun Protection Policy
In addition to our large outdoor play area we also take the children on regular excursions to local parks and places of interest. We have secured a local forestry school destination in which groups visit. See our Additional activities.
